During the first half of 2017 Italy’s cheese export reached 17,800 tonnes in the US and 2,400 tonnes in Canada , placing the country ahead of its main EU competitors : France, Denmark and the Netherlands. Other emerging markets are China , where 24% of the overall cheese import is Made-in-Italy, followed by Australia (17%) and Norway (11%). Export to Switzerland has increased considerably (10,200 tonnes during the first trimester), a surprising trend considering the country’s long-standing tradition in cheese making.
Along with the recent introduction of CETA in Canada, this positive trend could create new opportunities for independent cheese producers.
