The Italian Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies confirms that Minister Maurizio Martina and Minister of Economic Development Carlo Calenda signed two decrees that introduce the obligation to indicate the origin of rice and wheat for pasta on labels.
The aim is to maximise transparency – more than 85% of Italians want to have more information about the origin of rice and wheat for pasta – and to safeguard two important supply chains of the Italian food industry.
Minister Martina said that from mid-February 2018, labels will be more transparent. In particular, dry pasta produced in Italy will contain the following information:
• Country of wheat cultivation
• Country of milling
As far as rice is concerned, labels will include:
• Country of cultivation
• Country of manufactury
• Country of packaging
These indications must be clearly specified on labels.
