Delegated by the Italian State and under its supervision, the Consortium for the protection of gorgonzola cheese was created in 1970 which, with its own officials, supervises for the full respect and application of the regulations in force in Italy and abroad where the name of origin "gorgonzola" is protected.
With EC Regulation No. 1107/96, Gorgonzola cheese is recognized and registered by the European Union on the list of “dop” products on 12 June 1996.
